Predicting The Future

There are various studies that claim to have been able to predict change, trends and broad societal shifts. As a planner it was my key role and "trends" used to be a big subject. Here's my version of the same.
Like anyone, In last couple of years I have met different people, specially men of my age ie. 35 different regions and nationalities. Americans, Arabs, Chinese, Koreans, Asians, Sudanese jordanians Australians and French. It was more than meeting these people. Eating, drinking and having spent time with them actually helped me understand them better. Brought me closer to their lifestyle, their thinking and world view from their eyes. You must be wondering why am i bragging about all this, the fact is that it became a premise to my point of view on predicting how the world is going to be in coming years. Yes. Predicting future trends.
To start with let us take this small exercise. If I ask you to define people of each the following nationality in one word how would you?
Indian: jugadu
French: connesure
Americans: carefree
Chinese/Koreans: skeptical
Arabs: religious
And it is not based on the soundbites that I picked up from various sources, but the fact that I got to know them so closely.
Now a bit of an analysis, these men were born in 70's and till early 80's they were very close to their moms. Influenced by her. Loved by her and trained by her. Till they got into their teens and picked up different things from the society, the formative years were close to mom. Now you must be wondering what does it suggest?
Now let's understand the women of 70's from these regions and countries. American women, just got rebel, empowered and ready to take challenges. She was more of an independent personality. While a lot about French women is similar, but she was more fashion conscious and she was more of a style diva. As compared to Arab women, who were more religious and lived a restricted life. Chinese or orientals were suppressed and sexually harassed. They were part of the dominating male society. Not very different from Indians but with a little difference that Indian women were more about maximizing output from the scares. Large family too little to support.
And this is correlated with the behavior and trends among the today's men. They are their behavior is a clear reflection of their mom's way of life 30 years back.
And this is the basis of my hypothesis, to understand the trends of future, the easiest way to do ia to understand their mom. What is her current lifestyle? What are they doing and what is the impact of that lifestyle on her children. There are various studies that claim to have been able to predict change, trends and broad societal shifts.
